Job Description

Life Skills Adapted Classroom Teacher

Grades 6–12 | The LEAD Center | Hopewell, VA

Still want to teach special education—but want to do it somewhere you can really know your students, be creative, and make a difference?

The LEAD Center is looking for a passionate and collaborative educator to join our 6–12 Adapted Middle/High School Life Skills program. We welcome licensed teachers as well as individuals currently completing coursework toward a Virginia teaching license in General Curriculum or Adapted Curriculum.

At LEAD, teachers have the opportunity to do the work many people entered special education to do: build relationships, teach meaningful skills, see student growth, and help students become more successful and independent.

Our Life Skills students participate in Virginia's SOL and VSOL curriculum while also developing functional academics, communication, vocational skills, independent living skills, social skills, and transition skills. Our classroom is fully established and thoughtfully designed, giving a new teacher a strong foundation while also providing the freedom to bring your own creativity, ideas, and strengths to the program.

Why LEAD?

Small classrooms.
You will have the opportunity to truly know your students and provide individualized instruction rather than trying to meet the needs of a large classroom.

Meaningful teaching.
We believe Life Skills students deserve meaningful academics and high expectations. You'll teach SOL/VSOL content while helping students develop the skills they need for life beyond school.

A supportive team.
You won't be expected to figure everything out on your own. Teachers work closely with paraprofessionals, administrators, behavior professionals, and other educators.

Room to be creative.
We want teachers who see possibilities. If you have an idea for a vocational experience, community outing, independent-living activity, or new way to teach a concept, we want you to bring it to the table.

Real relationships.
Our school culture is built around knowing our students, believing in their potential, celebrating their progress, and genuinely enjoying the work we do together.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is passionate about working with students with disabilities.
  • Enjoys working with middle- and high-school students.
  • Is creative, flexible, and willing to think outside the box.
  • Believes students with disabilities can learn, grow, and become more independent.
  • Is interested in functional academics, vocational education, transition programming, and independent living skills.
  • Is willing to learn about behavior and use a thoughtful, individualized approach to supporting students.
  • Works well as part of a team.
  • Wants to grow as an educator and take ownership of their classroom.

You don't have to know everything. You do need to care, be willing to learn, and believe that what you do matters.

About The LEAD Center

The LEAD Center is an ABA-based therapeutic day school serving public-school students with disabilities in Central Virginia. We partner with local school divisions to support students who require a more individualized level of academic, behavioral, and functional support than may be available in a traditional school setting.

Our mission is simple:

To teach people to be successful in life.

We believe that mission applies to our students—and to the educators who work with them.

If you are currently preparing to become a teacher and want to begin your career in a school where you can learn, grow, be supported, and make a meaningful difference, we would love to meet you.

Come see what teaching can feel like at LEAD.
